Mailing List Cleanup - Laravel News (Part 1)
(This is part of an open ended series of posts where I write down random things I feel are sharable from the years of mailing lists I’ve not caught up on…)
I’ve got 197 messages in the Laravel News folder dating back to March 2022. I’ve spent the last decade building with Laravel and this is one of the handy tools to keep current with how we can constantly morph the apps. My side-hustle-turned-main-hustle Events In Plain Sight is also Laravel based. I just wish the ‘Community Links’ had more curation and commentary. Clearly I’m a fan of that approach…
Ok. I’m going to cheat on this one somewhat. Everything before 11.0 (101 messages) is just getting an instant delete. EiPS is currently L11 so today will be a list of interesting things I want to try and incorporate in. After that, I think the plan will be to upgrade to L12 and then point release one-at-a-time as I catch up.
- Jeffrey Way’s PhpStorm Setup in 2024 – I’m trying really hard to use PhpStorm after using Sublime and Textmate (I still miss it…) for almost 20 years. Please send setups, helps, tips, etc.
- Automatic Blade Formatting on Save in PhpStorm – Like this sort of thing. I’m sure its out of date now, but…
- Huh. There is a model:show command? Indeed there is.
- TimeWarden feels like a real-time slow query log, but full-stack. Of course, you need to have representative data to trigger things…
- Using withTrashed() in explicit route-model binding – had to jump through this hoop more than once. Like, everytime I’ve had to do a variation of ‘archive’.
- As part of learning an editor I need to really start to understand and use Generics to leverage it.
- How to Redirect Uppercase URLs to Lowercase with Laravel Middleware – EiPS is basically an SEO play, so SEO hacks need to be paid attention to.
- Commenter will probably get added sooner than later. I mean, in for a penny, in for a pound when it comes to user content, amirite?
- Honeystone SEO Configurator for Laravel – see above
- Automatically Hydrating Parent Models on Children - this feels like some useful black magic that is just buried in the docs all casual like
- Supercharge PhpStorm with Laravel Idea
- Blasp - Advanced Profanity Filter for Laravel – Fun story, I once had to do profanity testing for a major airline. They gave us their list of words to filter. It was hilarious.
- Sprout – Ugh. The multi-tenant package EiPS uses is long abandoned. At some point I’m going to have to switch. It is going to suuuuck.
- Storing password reset tokens in the cache makes a tonne of sense. Of course, my previous app had a bit of a cache problem where we would have to expunge everything from the cache so YMMV
- (I feel like I should learn more about Enums)
- laravel-process-approval – Part of the goal of EiPS is to remove gatekeeping, but approvals are something I’m probably going to have to look at.
- Log Alarm for Laravel – my plan is to log a lot of things to Slack. Even if I’m not paying for it and things expire. If I haven’t actioned them by then, it didn’t really matter, now did it?
