Cool Things - January 7, 2026
This week’s cool things are from device housekeeping. Here are 50 links from my laptop and phone.
Resetting all my Open Tabs from Macbook.
- Flock of Dimes – band Spotify randomly played for me. Sounds a lot like Beth Orton.
- It Follows – movie reccomendation from Mike Monterio’s newsletter
- The Pervert’s Guide to Ideology – as above
- Suspiria – and again
- Blood and Black Lace – another
- Manos: The Hands of Fate – ditto
- Invasion of the Bee Girls – last one
- Disco Life – by She She She. Shazam-ed from a set on Soundcloud. (Playing Toronto in February.)
- Tweaking the branding of museums and galleries isn’t enough – here’s how to create real change – from the Monocle daily mailing list on how to ‘fix’ museums. Sadly, my shitty little suburb is devoid of good museums.
- Branding that Means Business – a book I should acquire once the TBR pile gets lower and the income gets higher
- ‘The internet is dead.’ Long live print – here’s hoping. Via the Issues (coolest magazine shop in Toronto) mailing list.
- Tech once promised connection. Print magazines are delivering it – Also
- The APTK Framework: How to get more customers from SEO – I have a lot of SEO and AEO to wrap my head around the next month or so
- Just Fucking Ship – linked elsewhere, but still need to buy this
- Hot Chip - Over and Over (Official Video)
- Invisible Man – novel reccomendation from random person on Instagram
- The Wall – from same random person
- Civil Inattention – ‘Civil inattention establishes that each recognizes the other’s personhood without engagement.’. Feels roughly adjacent to Familiar Stranger
- Google consent management requirements for serving ads in the EEA, the UK, and Switzerland (for publishers) – If you want to serve Gogole ads you have to use one of their certified CMPs. You can’t ‘just’ pop up any old banner. Which is kinda annoying. And yet /another/ subscription I need to buy. Death by a billion cuts.
- Fizzy – I really want to like this. There is some invisible friction I have though.
- Doriana Grey – the ‘What are people saying?’ comments are great.
Closing some tabs on my phone. ‘Only’ 1221 at the start. A whole bunch are related to my playthrough of Dragon’s Quest 2 which won’t be linked.
- Rollback is an episode of The Six Million Dollar Man where he doesn 70s era Roller Derby. Look at that ‘helmet’.
- The Unbelievable Scale of AI’s Pirated-Books Problem – it is /really/ hard to have ‘ethical ai’ when all the models people rely on are bassed on stolen material. Yes, my stuff is in there too.
- A Guide to Claude Code 2.0 and getting better at using coding agents – That said, I need to wrap my head around it if I want to be employable [in my current field.] This seems like a not horrible article around the basic workflow. Even if the author is super annoying with the use of the word ‘sensei.’
- Is Debt Inherited in the United States? – result of a ‘someone might be wrong on the Internet’
- Goose Tutorials – I don’t understand the end goal of Goose
- bar omi – restaurant in Paris. Likely via Monocle.
- Introducing The Chanel J12 Automaton Caliber 6 Watch – I cannot tell you how great this watch is
- One World Under Doom – a many-months long cross over I can’t believe I got suckered into buying all the issues to. Completionism and comics are bad bedfellows.
- On Friday Deploys: Sometimes that Puppy Needs Murdering – Charity remains one of the smartest thinkers in tech.
- Startup Documentary Film – surreal to have former boss in a film about the company we built. (Funny that it starts with him walking into an office space and gesturing the camera to follow him – we never worked there.)
- Claude Commands: Build Predictable AI Coding Workflows (Complete Guide)
- Kerchung! – fun rings.
- MoreSpeakers.com – I like the mission of ‘Empowering the next generation of technology speakers through mentorship and community.’
- Geo Raglan Wool Sweater Melange – this is a great sweater
- Nooworks – some great [fabric] prints here
- What Does a Database for SSDs Look Like? – gotta love a good think piece
- How To Survive The Bullshit – This appeals to me
- Competitive Eater – Do I neeeed a new bag? No. Do I want one? Yes.
- Boo-Boo Bandages – Fun bandages
- The 30 Best Low-light Houseplants – except my office has no windows. I accept I need to buy grow lights if I am to have a plant.
- Digital Marketing Trends 2026 – I really like these.
- Weird Guy - Natural Indigo Selvedge - Canadian Tuxedo N&F Collab – I need to add some more pants to my wardrobe. Most selvedge jeans don’t come in a 38 waist.
- The Insaneum – Fun [art] prints
- Notes on using Gemini 3 Pro, part 3: Every prompting tip and trick I know (so far) – Tips from the only accordian player I know
- What is Weft Knitting? Types of Fabrics Produced – Fabric nerdiness
- A Still Like Tapestry Jacket – This is great. But no chance it is going to fit. Yay, 6’4” problems.
- RainSisters – you have no excuse for having a boring raincoat.
- The Saucy Milliner – wear more hats.
1096 open tabs remain.
